Choose the layer by function

Cool Dry tops and trousers are Oxford's lightweight, moisture-wicking option. Warm Dry products are thermal base layers, with standard, short-sleeve and high-neck versions represented in the range. Oxford's official information gives the Warm Dry thermal top and trousers fast-drying, moisture-wicking and flat-lock-seam specifications, but those details should not be assumed for every product on this page.

Chillout tops, trousers and knee layers are intended as a windproof barrier. The Advanced and ATMOS Core families offer other all-round layering choices, while ATMOS Heatcore, ATMOS Thermo, the Expedition gilet and puffer-style products introduce warmer or insulated mid-layer roles. A mid-layer is worn between the base and protective outer clothing rather than directly replacing either one.

How to build a practical riding layer system

• Begin with the base. Choose a close, comfortable layer that can move moisture away from the skin and avoid bulky folds beneath armour.
• Add warmth only when needed. A fleece, gilet or puffer mid-layer needs enough room beneath the jacket without making the outer garment tight.
• Keep armour correctly positioned. Extra layers must not push shoulder, elbow, back, hip or knee protectors away from their intended areas.
• Plan for the whole ride. Consider motorway wind chill, stops, changing temperatures and whether unwanted layers can be stored safely.
