Oxford base layers help you organise warmth and comfort beneath your riding clothing. Start by separating next-to-skin layers from insulating mid layers and wind-resistant pieces. Each has a different role, and the most useful combination depends on your journey, the weather and how much space your protective outfit allows.

Oxford Advanced Base Layer Top Charcoal Marl — Advanced base-layer top, for next-to-skin layering.

Oxford Advanced Base Layer Trouser Charcoal Marl — Advanced base-layer trousers, showing the matching lower-body format.

Oxford Chillout Windproof Base Layer Top Black — Chillout windproof top, illustrating a different layering purpose.

Manage moisture before adding bulk

Oxford’s Advanced base-layer top is designed to draw perspiration away from the skin and uses a lightweight, close-fitting construction. This is different from simply adding a thick jumper. Choose the specific fabric and purpose you need, then consider whether a separate insulating layer is required for cold starts or prolonged motorway riding.

Check the contact points

Reach forwards, bend your knees and make sure the fabric lies smoothly beneath waistbands, cuffs and protective inserts. Tops should remain comfortably tucked in without pulling at the shoulders. Leggings should not bunch behind the knees or above boots. Use the product’s sizing guidance rather than assuming a casual clothing size will give the intended fit.

Build an adaptable travel outfit

A removable mid layer can be useful when a cold morning becomes a warmer afternoon. Keep sufficient room for this arrangement without making the outer jacket loose around its armour. Follow each layer’s washing and drying instructions. Thermal and moisture-management garments are comfort components, not replacements for protective jackets, trousers or impact armour.

Test the full layering system

At Moto Central, compare layers beneath the riding clothes you actually use, including any winter insulation.
