The Arai X-Tend is an open-face helmet with a full-length visor, offering a different riding experience from a bare jet helmet or a closed full-face design. This guide covers the X-Tend family, the distinction between X-Tend and X-Tend Ram, and the checks that matter when choosing visors or refreshing the fit of an existing helmet.
The X-Tend leaves the lower face open rather than enclosing it within a structural chin bar. Its visor provides a screen in front of the face, but does not turn the helmet into a full-face design. Think about the exposure you are comfortable with on your usual journeys, and try your glasses with the visor lowered. For an existing helmet, identify the exact model from its labels before searching for replacement components.
Arai's UK compatibility guide assigns SAMZ visors to X-Tend and X-Tend Ram. Similar-looking shields from the CT, SZ or full-face ranges should not be selected by appearance alone. Compare the full part description, mounting system and any tint restrictions. A clear visor is a useful starting point for changing light; a darker replacement needs to suit the conditions and its own usage markings.
Arai's parts book distinguishes original X-Tend pads, X-Tend Ram Dry-Cool pads and later FCS versions. Thickness alone is therefore not enough to identify a replacement. Bring the old pad or a clear photograph of its backing label, together with the helmet size. The correct component should preserve secure, comfortable support rather than simply make a loose helmet feel softer.
The historical parts catalogue also identifies different ventilation pieces for X-Tend and X-Tend Ram, with some ducts classed as service parts. Ask for the exact part and fitting route rather than attempting to adapt a vent. Before spending on a visor or interior, have the helmet's age, condition and fit considered together. Replacement comfort parts do not establish that an older shell is suitable for continued use.
Bring your helmet when identifying replacement parts, or visit our showroom with your usual glasses and riding jacket to compare the fit of a complete helmet. We can help separate the helmet, visor and interior choices.
