Motorcycle touring boots are built around long periods on the bike, repeated stops and changing road conditions. What makes a useful touring boot?

Waterproofing also varies. Some touring boots use GORE-TEX, others use a manufacturer's own membrane, and some lighter or more ventilated models are not designed as waterproof footwear. Fit, controls and all-day comfort
Use the socks you expect to tour in and measure both feet before selecting a size. With the boot fastened, flex your ankle into a normal riding position. There should be room for the toes, limited heel lift and no concentrated pressure from the zip, buckle or protector. If you use thicker winter socks, allow for them without leaving the heel loose.
Check the toe height under the gear lever and the amount of feel you retain at the rear brake. Walk in the boots indoors to assess flex at the forefoot, but judge the final fit on the bike as well. Tall touring boots should close comfortably around the calf without forcing the zip, and trouser hems should not bunch against the shin.
Certification and trip planning
Protective motorcycle footwear may be certified to EN 13634. The standard includes requirements for the whole boot, upper, seams and outsole, with tests covering areas such as abrasion, impact cutting and transverse rigidity. Optional properties, including resistance to water penetration and impact protection at the ankle or shin, are not automatically present on every certified boot.
