Mips motorcycle helmets contain a low-friction system designed to help reduce rotational motion transferred to the head during certain angled impacts. It is one part of the complete helmet design, alongside the shell, impact liner, retention system, fit and model-specific approval.
Mips Motorcycle Helmets
This Moto Central collection includes road, adventure and motocross helmets from brands such as Bell, Icon and Alpinestars. Features including visor equipment, peaks, goggle ports, sun visors, ventilation, fasteners and intercom provision vary by model, so choose the helmet format and fit before comparing secondary features.
What the Mips system does
In a Mips-equipped helmet, a low-friction layer is intended to allow a small amount of movement between parts of the helmet during certain impacts. This is designed to help redirect rotational motion that may otherwise be transferred to the head. The implementation can differ between helmet models.
Choose the helmet type first
Full-face road helmets
Compare the eye port, main visor, Pinlock provision, internal sun visor, ventilation and fastening system. Confirm what is supplied because tinted visors, inserts and communications equipment may be optional.
Adventure helmets
Adventure designs may combine a road visor with a peak and goggle-compatible opening. Check the approved configurations, peak and visor removal instructions, weight and airflow for your expected road and off-road use.
Motocross helmets
Motocross helmets are normally used with separate goggles and have pronounced peaks and open eye ports. Confirm goggle fit, peak position, ventilation and the helmet’s specific approval before use.
Model and approval
Mips is not a road-approval standard. Check the label and product specification for the exact helmet, market and homologation, including ECE 22.06 where stated. Never transfer an approval claim between related models.
Getting the fit right
A secure, even fit is fundamental. Measure the widest part of your head using the manufacturer’s instructions, then use the size chart for the exact model. The helmet should feel firm all around without isolated pressure points, and it should not rotate freely when the fastened chin strap is secure.
Head shape and internal padding vary between brands and helmet families. Check the fit in your normal riding position and make sure the eye port, cheek pads, glasses and any planned intercom speakers remain comfortable. For more detail, use the motorcycle helmet sizing guide.
Features to compare model by model
After fit and format, compare shell construction, shell-size range, visor mechanism, peak, ventilation, lining, fastener and available replacement parts. Pinlock lenses, dark visors, breath guards, chin curtains and speaker recesses are not supplied with every helmet.
Browse all motorcycle helmets if you want to compare Mips-equipped options with other approved helmet designs. A product page should identify the exact helmet model, colour, size range, approval and included accessories.
Care, impacts and replacement
Follow the helmet maker’s instructions for cleaning the shell, visor and removable lining. Avoid solvents, unapproved adhesives and accessories that require drilling or cutting. The Mips layer should be left in its intended position.
A helmet that has sustained an impact may have damage that is not visible. Stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s inspection or replacement guidance. Store the helmet away from excessive heat, fuel vapour and heavy objects, and replace worn or damaged parts only with compatible components.

Customer questions
Does Mips mean a helmet is ECE approved?
No. Mips is an impact-management technology, while ECE approval applies to the complete helmet. Confirm the homologation shown for the exact product and size you are considering.
Can I fit Mips to my current helmet?
No. It is integrated during helmet design and manufacture. Do not add, remove or modify the system yourself.
Is a Mips helmet automatically the best fit?
No. The technology does not determine head shape or sizing. A different approved helmet that fits correctly may be more suitable than a Mips-equipped model that does not.
