Motorcycle Oils & Lubricants

Motorcycle oils and lubricants do different jobs, from lubricating an engine or chain to freeing a stiff component and protecting suitable surfaces from corrosion. Choose by the application and manufacturer's specification first. A familiar brand, matching colour or general-purpose label does not make one product suitable for every part of the bike.

Start with the component you are maintaining
Engine oils
Match the motorcycle handbook's viscosity and performance requirements, including the engine type and relevant clutch specification. Oil labels can state both an SAE viscosity and API or JASO performance classifications. Check the complete requirement rather than selecting solely by a number such as 10W-40.
Motorcycle chain lubricants
Choose a lubricant for the chain type and conditions you ride in. Road, off-road, wet-weather and dry-weather formulations have different intended applications. Check suitability for the chain's seals and follow the specified cleaning, application and settling instructions.
Multi-purpose maintenance sprays
These can be useful for specified tasks such as displacing moisture or freeing stiff components. Muc-Off's guidance describes MO-94 for selected component-care jobs. That does not make a multi-purpose aerosol a replacement for the engine oil or grease specified in a service procedure.
Greases and specialist products
Bearings, pivots, cables and other service points can have individual lubrication requirements. Use the product and method specified for that component. If a task calls for a particular grease or a dry-running arrangement, do not substitute a spray simply because it is easier to apply.
Build chain care around cleaning and lubrication
Lubricant applied over accumulated dirt is not a substitute for cleaning. Use a suitable chain cleaner, let the chain reach the condition required by the product instructions and apply the lubricant as directed. Remove excess where specified and allow the stated time before riding.
Inspect the chain as part of the routine and follow the motorcycle manufacturer's adjustment and replacement guidance. Choose motorcycle cleaning products for the surfaces involved, and check product compatibility rather than mixing treatments by assumption.
Keep lubricants away from surfaces that need grip
Control overspray and protect braking surfaces, tyre treads and rider contact areas from contamination. Follow the label's precautions, ventilation and storage directions. A surface that looks clean can still carry a slippery residue, so investigate any accidental contamination before riding.
Keep a record of what the bike requires
Note the exact product specification used for each service task, especially if you maintain more than one motorcycle. Check the handbook and current product data again when replacing an old bottle or changing brands. Products described as synthetic, premium or racing still need to meet the bike's requirements.
For chain systems that meter their own lubricant, compare chain oilers and use the fluid specified by that system. For maintenance access, choose appropriate paddock stands and follow their support instructions.
Choose the product for the service task
Bring the relevant handbook specification or details of the component you are maintaining to Moto Central in Wolvey. We can help compare product information and identify the intended application before you select an oil, lubricant or maintenance spray.
