Motorcycle knee protectors include trouser inserts, wearable knee guards and designs extending down the shin. Choose around your riding clothing, boots and the movement your riding demands. Compare impact certification, coverage and retention, then check where the protector sits with your knees bent in your normal riding position.

Choose a protection format for your riding kit
Armour for riding trousers
Removable inserts fit designated pockets in jeans, textile trousers and leathers. Check the garment's recommended protector and available height adjustment. A good match needs to stay aligned with the knee when seated, rather than simply filling the pocket while you stand.
Flexible sleeve guards
A sleeve-style guard carries protection independently of the outer trousers. Compare the sizing measurements, grippers, straps and fabric behind the knee. Zandona's NetCube Pro-Fit Knee Short is an example using a flexible construction, grip areas and an adjustable fastening.
Knee and shin guards
Longer guards extend coverage towards the boot. Look at how the upper and lower sections move together and how the straps retain them. Leatt's Dual Axis illustrates an articulated knee-and-shin format; assess the actual size and boot interface rather than selecting by height alone.
Compact and extended inserts
Protection ranges may offer more than one shape or coverage option. D3O Racing LP2 Pro, for example, lists Type A and Type B knee options. Check the exact part application and dimensions so the chosen coverage works with your trousers.
Check position with your boots on
Try the complete lower-body outfit and bend your knees as you would on the bike. Look for a secure position over the intended area and check for bunching behind the knee. On a long guard, assess the point where it meets or overlaps the boot according to the equipment instructions.
Standing, sitting and moving between riding positions can reveal different fit issues. Follow the maker's measurement guide and adjustment sequence; extra strap tension should not be used to make an incorrectly sized guard fit.
Read the rating for the actual protector
Check the EN 1621-1 marking and performance level for the knee component. Coverage type, shin coverage and retention design are additional considerations. A shared range name does not mean all sizes and variants have the same dimensions or application.
Knee guards, braces and sliders
These product names describe different equipment. An articulated knee guard should not be assumed to provide the same function as a purpose-designed brace. Compare knee braces separately if that is the equipment you are seeking, and follow the maker's fitting guidance.
An external slider on racing leathers is also separate from internal knee impact armour. For replacement contact pieces, browse knee and elbow sliders and match the suit's attachment system.
Build the outfit around the riding you do
For road use, choose suitable motorcycle trousers as well as compatible armour. For off-road use, assess guard movement beneath your riding pants and alongside motorcycle boots. Check current event requirements when choosing competition equipment and follow the manufacturer's care and replacement instructions.
