Understanding EN 1621-1, Level 1 and Level 2
EN 1621-1:2012 is the standard commonly cited for motorcycle limb impact protectors. Under that standard, Level 2 permits a lower mean transmitted force in the impact test than Level 1. The cited limits are 20 kN for Level 2 and 35 kN for Level 1, so the level describes tested impact performance, not fit or garment compatibility.
Type A and Type B refer to the tested coverage area. Type B covers a larger area than Type A, but a larger protector must still fit the pocket or guard location correctly. Approval markings can also identify the intended position, such as E for elbow or K for knee. Read the complete marking rather than assuming that two similarly shaped inserts are interchangeable.
How to check fit and compatibility
- For an armour pocket: remove the existing insert and compare its dimensions, curvature and fastener position with the replacement. Check whether the garment requires hook-and-loop backing or a particular left and right shape.
- For a worn guard: use the manufacturer's size chart and test the fit in a riding posture. The protector should remain centred over the elbow through steering and lever movement without cutting into the arm.
- For children and younger riders: choose a youth, mini or kids product where specified. An oversized adult guard can rotate or interfere with movement.
- For sets and pairs: confirm the quantity. Product names in this range include individual inserts, pairs, multi-piece packs and guards sold with their own retention system.
- For care and replacement: follow the maker's washing instructions, remove inserts before washing a garment where directed, and inspect protection after a significant impact or visible damage.
Soft armour or structured protection?
Low-profile viscoelastic inserts can be comfortable inside road jackets and may be highly ventilated or flexible. Structured guards add their own sleeve, straps or outer shell and are often chosen when there is no suitable garment pocket or when more wraparound retention is wanted. The right option depends on the garment, the riding environment and how reliably the protector stays in place.
Level, coverage and comfort need to be considered together. A slimmer Level 1 protector may suit a tight pocket that cannot safely accept a thicker insert, while compatible Level 2 armour offers the more demanding impact-test performance. Never trim or reshape a protector unless its manufacturer explicitly permits it.

Elbow protector customer questions
Can a knee protector be used at the elbow?
Only when the approval and manufacturer information specify both positions, often shown as E/K. It must also fit the elbow pocket correctly; a shared approval does not guarantee compatibility with every jacket.
Is Level 2 always the right choice?
Level 2 has the lower transmitted-force limit in the EN 1621-1 impact test, but size, pocket compatibility and stable positioning remain essential. Choose the highest suitable level that fits the intended garment or retention system correctly.
