Convenient when the jacket or suit has a compatible pocket. Measure carefully and use the maker's reference because a protector that is too small can move, while one that is too large may buckle.
Strapped protectors
Worn directly around the torso beneath suitable clothing. They can offer a different coverage area, but the shoulder and waist straps must remain secure without restricting breathing or movement.
Protector vests
A supporting vest can help hold back and sometimes chest protection in position. Confirm which protectors are included and which are optional.
What EN 1621-2 means
EN 1621-2 is the motorcycle standard for back and lumbar impact protectors. It recognises full-back, central-back and lower-back designs and provides Level 1 and Level 2 performance categories. Level 2 uses lower permitted transmitted-force limits, but both the level and the coverage type need to suit the rider and intended use.
Read the complete marking: look for the back-protector standard, performance level, coverage symbol or type, product size and any optional temperature test shown. Do not treat the word “CE” on its own as enough compatibility information.
Check fit on the motorcycle
The protector should sit centrally and cover the area intended by its approval. In a jacket pocket, it should lie flat without curling at the edges. A strapped design should not rise towards the neck or drop below its intended position when you lean forward. Test shoulder movement, head checks and the reach to the bars with the complete jacket or suit over it.
- Use the rider-height or waist-to-shoulder sizing method stated by the protector manufacturer.
- Check that a long protector does not catch the seat or push the jacket collar upwards.
- Allow enough room in the garment without making the jacket loose enough to let other armour move.
- Confirm compatibility with an airbag garment before combining the two systems.
Ventilation, flexibility and coverage
Open structures, perforation and flexible materials can improve comfort, but these features vary. A very low-profile insert may suit commuting clothing, while a larger strapped design may suit riders prioritising a different area of coverage. Compare only products that fit correctly and carry the required approval rather than selecting on thickness alone.
Care and replacement
Follow the protector and garment instructions when removing, cleaning or refitting armour. Strong heat, solvents and unsuitable detergents can damage some materials. Inspect the protector, pocket and straps regularly, and follow the manufacturer's post-impact advice after a fall or collision.

Can I upgrade a Level 1 insert to Level 2?
Only if a Level 2 protector is compatible with the garment pocket and the maker permits that fit. Match dimensions and reference, not just brand.
Is a longer protector automatically better?
No. Coverage must correspond to the approved type and rider size, while the protector must remain stable and comfortable in the riding position.
Are back protectors included with jackets?
Some jackets include one, some use a simple comfort pad and others provide an empty pocket. Check the exact jacket specification.
