The important first step is to match the treatment to the item. A technical textile wash is not a substitute for leather care, a suede conditioner is not intended for smooth leather, and a surface proofer cannot repair a damaged waterproof membrane. Check the garment or equipment care label as well as the instructions on the Storm product before use.

Technical clothing wash and proofing
Cleaning products remove dirt and residues that can affect the feel and performance of riding layers. Proofers are intended to refresh surface water repellency on compatible fabrics. Storm also offers paired wash-and-proof systems for suitable garments, including products designed to complete both stages in one machine cycle.
Base layers, merino and down
Specialist washes are formulated for particular fibres or fillings. Choose the base-layer treatment for synthetic performance garments, the merino and wool option for those natural fibres, and the down-specific kit only for washable down items. Follow the care label for temperature, spin and drying guidance.
Leather, suede and nubuck footwear
Saddle soap and leather creams serve different stages of smooth-leather care, while suede and nubuck require products that suit their textured finish. Coloured creams may change the appearance, so test on an inconspicuous area first and use neutral treatment only where the footwear maker permits it.
Visors, goggles and helmet interiors
Rain repellent and anti-fog sprays do different jobs and should be applied only to compatible surfaces. Avoid using a general visor treatment on Pinlock inserts, photochromic lenses or coated optics unless the relevant manufacturer explicitly approves it. Helmet deodoriser freshens interiors but does not replace proper liner cleaning.
Tents, covers and outdoor equipment
Spray-on wash and proofer products make it easier to treat equipment that cannot go in a washing machine. Keep these products for the material stated on the bottle. A motorcycle cover, tent or bag may combine several fabrics, coatings and taped seams with different care requirements.
Small repairs
A repair patch can help with a suitable clean, dry surface when used as directed. It should not be treated as a structural repair to abrasion-resistant riding kit, footwear, helmets or protective equipment. If damage affects protection, fastening or weatherproof seams, seek the item maker's advice.
What reproofing can and cannot do
When the outer fabric of waterproof clothing starts absorbing water, the garment can feel heavier and less comfortable even if its internal membrane is still intact. Cleaning and an appropriate proofer may restore the water-repellent finish. They cannot seal a punctured membrane, replace failed seam tape or repair worn fabric.
Practical care before you start
Empty pockets, close zips and fasteners, remove detachable armour where the garment maker instructs, and brush off loose dirt. Household fabric softener, bleach and aggressive detergent can be unsuitable for technical riding kit. Use the dosage and application method on the Storm label, and make sure a washing machine drawer is free from old detergent residue when the instructions call for it.
For footwear, remove heavy mud and let the boot dry naturally before applying the appropriate treatment. Avoid direct heat, which can harm leather, adhesives and waterproof components. With lenses and visors, wash away grit first so that wiping does not scratch the surface.

Storm Care: customer questions
Is cleaner the same as proofer?
No. Cleaner removes dirt and residues, while proofer refreshes water repellency on compatible materials. Some kits contain both products or combine the two stages, so follow that product's directions.
Will reproofing fix a leaking garment?
It may help when the outer fabric is wetting out, but it will not repair torn material, failed seam tape or a damaged membrane. Inspect the garment before treatment.
Can I use the same product on every motorcycle boot?
No. Smooth leather, suede, nubuck and synthetic footwear require different care. Check the boot maker's instructions, especially where breathable membranes or special finishes are used.
Can rain repellent be used as anti-fog spray?
No. They are separate treatments for different surfaces and purposes. Confirm compatibility with the visor, goggle lens or insert before application.
Are repair patches suitable for damaged protective clothing?
Only for appropriate non-structural repairs. Damage to an impact area, protective seam, armour pocket or closure should be assessed by the garment manufacturer or a qualified repairer.
