Nikwax care products help you look after motorcycle clothing and footwear without treating every material in the same way. Start with the care label, then decide whether your kit needs cleaning, renewed water repellency or a treatment designed for leather or mixed-material boots. Familiar names such as Tech Wash and TX.Direct describe different stages of that process, making the right pairing more useful than simply choosing a larger bottle.

Clean first, then assess water repellency
If rain starts soaking into the outer fabric of a waterproof jacket, it may need cleaning before it needs reproofing. Nikwax explains that dirt can mask the fabric’s existing durable water repellent finish, commonly called DWR. Tech Wash is designed to clean suitable technical clothing and can revive that existing finish; TX.Direct adds water repellency when further treatment is needed.
Wash-in or spray-on?
Check the garment construction as well as the washing instructions. Nikwax recommends TX.Direct Spray-On for waterproof clothing with wicking linings, allowing the outer fabric to be treated without changing the lining’s intended behaviour. Wash-In is an alternative for suitable garments without that type of lining. Neither choice overrides the clothing manufacturer’s care label.
Boots need their own treatment
Fabric & Leather Proof is designed for combination footwear, rather than being a general clothing wash. Nikwax specifies application to clean, wet footwear and natural drying. It also notes that pale materials may darken, so test a hidden area first. Match any treatment to the boot’s particular leather, textile panels and finish.
Make care part of your riding routine
Keep the washing and drying instructions with your kit, and read the dosage on the actual product you buy. TX.Direct Spray-On develops its water repellency through air drying, which can be useful where a garment’s label does not permit tumble drying. A cleaning and proofing routine addresses surface performance; damaged seams, worn fabric or a leaking fastening need separate attention.
