The new HJC i101 rotational modular helmet takes a different approach to flip-up versatility. Instead of leaving the chin bar raised above the forehead, its mechanism rotates the chin section towards the rear to create a more compact open configuration. With ECE 22.06 P/J approval, an internal sun shield and a carefully ventilated interior, it is aimed at riders who regularly switch between full-face protection and approved open-face convenience.
Six HJC i101 colours are listed at Moto Central for pre-order. Prices begin at £229.99 for Semi Flat Black, with the Astel and Mira graphics priced at £249.99.
Why the Rotational Chin Bar Matters
A conventional modular helmet raises its chin bar to the top of the shell. That is convenient at a standstill, but it creates a tall profile and moves weight higher when the helmet is open. The i101 rotates the chin bar farther back, producing a neater silhouette and keeping the open configuration closer to the shell.
This layout is useful for urban riding, touring stops and slower riding where extra airflow is welcome. P/J dual approval is important because it confirms the helmet has been tested for use in both specified configurations. Riders should still follow HJC's instructions and ensure the mechanism is fully locked before setting off.

The chin bar moves towards the rear rather than remaining perched above the forehead.

Compact APC Shell

HJ-53 Visor System
The main HJ-53 visor offers 99% UV protection and an anti-scratch coating. It is prepared for the DKS720 Pinlock insert, allowing riders to add a dedicated anti-fog layer for cold mornings, rain and long touring days.
HJC uses HJ-53A visors for sizes XS through L and HJ-53B visors for XL and XXL. This split allows the visor hardware to remain appropriately matched to the two shell-size groups. When buying a replacement visor, riders should therefore check both their helmet size and the correct visor code.
Adjustable Internal Sun Shield
The dark-smoke HJ-V12 sun shield is operated through a cable-controlled mechanism positioned at the lower left of the shell. Its adjustable position lets the rider tailor coverage, while the main clear visor can remain fitted for mixed conditions. This is especially practical for low winter sun, bright motorway stretches and touring through rapidly changing light.
Ventilation and Heat Management
Three intakes and two exhausts feed HJC's Advanced Channelling Ventilation System. Air entering at the front and upper shell is routed through internal channels before warmer air exits at the rear. The arrangement is intended to support comfort in both open and closed configurations.
Because a modular touring helmet often sees long hours of use, ventilation is only part of the comfort story. Shell balance, interior contact and the position of accessories can all influence fatigue, so the i101's compact geometry and dedicated speaker accommodation are valuable details.
OEKO-TEX Interior and Everyday Fit
The antibacterial interior uses OEKO-TEX material and is designed for moisture management. Crown and cheek pads can be removed and washed, while interchangeable cheek pads allow compatible fit adjustments. Glasses grooves provide extra space around eyewear arms, helping reduce pressure during longer rides.
A micro buckle gives quick, consistent fastening. Before riding, the strap should sit securely beneath the jaw and the helmet should resist rotation when moved from the chin area. The right size should feel evenly snug without painful local pressure.
Who should consider the i101?
The i101 is for commuters and tourers who want a true flip-back modular layout rather than a traditional raised chin bar. It will particularly suit riders who spend meaningful time in both configurations and value a more compact open profile. Those seeking the lowest entry price may prefer the C92, while riders wanting maximum simplicity and airflow can look at the i41.

Moto Central Verdict
The i101's appeal rests on its rotational chin bar. By moving the open chin section around the shell, HJC creates a tidier and potentially better-balanced alternative to the conventional flip-up layout. Add current P/J approval, a Pinlock-ready visor, adjustable sun shield, OEKO-TEX lining and six well-judged finishes, and the result is a compelling modular helmet for riders who will genuinely use both configurations.
