Founding and Early Vision
Dainese was founded in 1972 by 24-year-old Lino Dainese in Molvena, Vicenza. Inspired by a trip to London on his Vespa, where he saw riders wearing full leather suits, Lino set out to create motorcycle apparel that combined protection, performance, and style. His first product, motocross leather trousers, marked the start of a journey that would transform rider safety.
1970s - The Birth of Protection
In 1974, Dainese broke away from the all-black tradition by introducing elastic inserts for greater comfort and bright colours for visibility and style. Just a year later, racing legend Giacomo Agostini wore the brand’s first custom-designed track suit, signalling its commitment to professional-level performance. In 1978, a collaboration with rider Barry Sheene and designer Marc Sadler produced the world’s first motorcycle racing back protector – a pioneering step in rider safety.
1980-1990: Expanding Milestones
The 1980s saw continual innovation, including enhanced knee sliders in 1980 and the now-iconic aerodynamic hump in 1988, designed to improve aerodynamics and rider performance. By the 1990s, Dainese had broadened its range to include composite body armour, gloves with carbon protection, and advanced boots, while also branching into other sports such as mountain biking, skiing, and equestrian disciplines.
1995-2000+ - The Airbag Revolution
In 1995, Lino Dainese sketched the concept for the D-air® airbag system – a technology that would redefine motorcycling safety. The first prototype was unveiled at Intermot Munich in 2000, with the first real-world activation taking place during a MotoGP session in 2007. By 2011, the Racing version was launched commercially, followed in 2015 by the D-air Street jacket for everyday motorcyclists.
2000-Present: Innovation Beyond Riding
Dainese’s innovation extended beyond motorcycling. In 2007, the brand acquired AGV helmets, furthering its mission for complete rider protection. The Dainese Technology Center (D-Tec) has since secured over 100 international patents. The company has also ventured into aerospace, creating SkinSuit and BioSuit designs for astronauts, tested aboard the International Space Station in 2015 and 2016. The D-air® system has been adapted for workplace safety, offshore use, and sailing, including Sea-Guard jackets for America’s Cup yachts.
Corporate and Cultural Growth
Between 2007 and 2014, Investcorp acquired 80% of Dainese, with founder Lino retaining 20%. In 2022, The Carlyle Group became the majority shareholder, valuing the company at around €630 million. Despite its global reach, with offices in California and Hong Kong and an international retail network, Dainese has kept its core R&D and production in Italy.
